world war one
the great migrationThe Great Migration was when African Americans migrated north for factory jobs during the war.
This is a painting showing the migrations of blacks to the north for factory jobs.
Many migrated to big cities for factory jobs, such as Detroit to work for Henry Ford. Although they were not treated very well and were the first to be fired if a white worker came.
wilson's 14 pointsWilson's 14 points was made for the Treaty of Versailles and was what Wilson thought that had to be done to keep the peace and to end all wars. The main points were 1. No secret treaties, 2. Free navigation to all seas and 14. League of Nations must be created
Wilson's 14 points were not all met, actually many were not met. But they did form a League of Nations that the U.S. was not part of and it ultimately failed due to two main reasons; the U.S. was not in it and they had no authority outside of the league.

selective service actAlso known as the WWI draft, this required men 18 years or older to register with the government in order to be randomly selected for military service.
To fight in a war the U.S. needed troops, not many were in listing so they put the draft in effect. Making Americans believe that it was their moral duty to help in the war was the biggest theme in their propaganda posters.
This was a card men had to fill out to put in the randm selection for the draft.

Wilson believed that if the nations followed the 14 points there would never be another world war. He wanted the middle ground between the war and an intervention.
The League of Nations was not very powerful inside their league and outside. They did not include every nation and any nation in the league could drop out very easily. The league helped resolve some issues but in the end failed.

The Sides of wwiThere were two side of the war;
Trench warfare was big in WWI. This type of warfare made it difficult to win a battle quickly. Many men got sick or died because of these trenches.
The Allies surrounded the Central Powers which was an advantage for the Allies, until Russia dropped out of the war due to a revolution at home and there was only fighting on the west side.
league of nationsSet up to provide a forum for nations to discuss and settle their grievances with out having to resort to war. This was part of Wilson's 14 points but the US was not part of the League and the League had no influence on anyone that was not in the League.

core american valuesNationalism is shown by people started "Americanizing" things that were German like the German Shepard was called a Liberty Pup.
Persistance was shown by the people at home in the factories working for the war. They had to ration their food so they could send more over and everyones job revolved around war effort. The ability to change was shown hoe peoples jobs changed from building cars to building tanks and guns. |
change from previous era The change is that the US is now in war and every job revolves around the war effort. The country is in total warfare and people have to ration their foods. Because we are in total warfare people also no longer have the freedom of speech.
