the cold war abroadNato The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was between twelve nations and was a defensive military alliance.
The alliance was between Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal joined with the U.S. and Canada. This was a big deal because it was the first time the US had entered a military alliance during peace time.
truman doctrine The Truman Doctrine is an international relations policy to help Greece and Turkey economically and military.
President Truman asked Congress for $400 million in economic and military aid for Greece and Turkey in a speech on March 12, 1947. Congress agreed with Truman and thought that it was essential to keeping Soviet influence from spreading.

the cold war at homeCAPITALISM v. communism Capitalism vs. Communism or the United States vs. the USSR in competing political ideologies. This conflict also caused the Cold War between the US and USSR.
The U.S. used the policy of containment to try to stop the spread of communism that the Soviets were trying to spread in 1946. The US took extreme measure in trying to contain communism such as offering money and military aid to many countries due to the fear of the domino effect because many countries were broke after the world war.

mccarthyism McCarthyism is coined from Joseph McCarthy were the attacks on suspected communists in the early 1950's.
Joseph McCarthy accused innocent civilians that they were communists and put them on trial. This violated peoples rights and when they brought them to trial there was little to no supporting evidence.

marshall plan George Marshall who was secretary of state came up with this plan that resembles the Truman Doctrine with wanting to provide economic and military aid to foreign countries.
The plan said that the US should provide aid to all European nations that wanted it. The US sent $12.5 billion dollars of aid to Western Europe to Eastern Europe and the USSR.
korean war The Korean War was a war between the Republic of Korea or South Korea and North Korea. North Korean troops had penetrated deep into South Korea so South Korea called on the UN to stop the invasion.

hollywood ten The Hollywood Ten were 10 writers, actors, producers and directors who were accused of being communist and refused to cooperate because they thought that the hearings were unconstitutional.
The ten that were accused were also black listed meaning that they could no longer work in the movie business or other jobs because no one wanted to hire someone who was accused of being a communist. Because they did not cooperate they were sent to prison.

Sixteen nations sent 520,000 troops to aid South Korea and over 90 percent of those troops were American. The troops were placed under the command of General Douglas MacArthur.
The 38th Parallel was the border between North and South Korea. The Japanese troops that were north of this parallel surrendered to the Soviets and the troops south surrendered to the Americans. In the end of the war the border had not changed and two nations developed, communist North Korea and democratic South Korea.

berlin airlifts The Berlin Airlifts were an attempt to break the blockade over Germany. These aircrafts flew over food and supplies to West Berlin to feed the starving citizens for 327 days.
The planes dropped everything from fuel, and food to medicine to toys and games. 277 thousand flights occurred and brought West Berlin 2.3 million tons of supplies.
Joseph Stalin realized that he could shut down West Berlin by cutting off their food supply, so he closed all high ways and rail roads into west Berlin. American and British officers wanted to help the people so they sent food and supplies by airlift.

The United states showed progress by joining the United Nations, because the League of Nations that happened before the US did not join and this time they did. Also the US joined NATO which was the first time they joined a military alliance in peace time. The US was fighting a war to stop communism because in communism is to create a classless society so everyone would be equal and the US was trying to stop this. |
changes from previous era The change from WWII was that now people are almost terrified of communism and that when Joseph McCarthy starts accusing people of being a communist they believe him. The American citizens are more scared and gullible. This was also the closest the US has been to a nuclear war. The US also expanded their sphere of influence on 3rd world countries.
