Vietnam Years & social change
timeline
Domino Theory The idea that if a Nation were to fall under communist rule, then nearby nations would also fall to communist rule also. For example if Vietnam fell to communist rule then their neighboring countries like Hawaii then America.
Like shown above if one country falls to communism then the other countries are doomed to fall to Communism as well. This is linking the countries on the brink of communism to a row of dominos waiting to fall one after another.
gulf of tonkin resolution The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was approved by Congress and basically gave President Johnson a blank check for the war.
The Gulf incident happened on August 2, 1964, and the destroyer USS Maddox was performing a signals intelligence patrol as part of DESTO operations when the North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boats attacked, resulting in a sea battle.

ho Chi Minh trail The Ho Chi Minh Trail was a network of paths along the borders of Vietnam, laos, and Cambodia. These paths helped keep the troops safe and made it harder for the US to find them.
The trail connected Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in about 850 miles. They used this trail to transfer supplies and arms to the ones who needed it.

The result of this incident was the President Johnson was given the authority to assist any Southeast Asian country whose government was threatened by communist impact. The attack was alleged and the US had no business being in it, but in the beginning of the war people believed that the Vietnamese started this by attack their ship so many supported the war.

The Vietnamese had these secret underground houses that were able to protect them from the US troops these un traceable houses frustrated the US which caused the US to resort to bombing the Vietnamese because nothing else was working.
peace with honor President Nixon claimed that he wanted this "Peace with Honor" bull crap because he realized that the US was not winning, but then Nixon turned around and bombed Cambodia after saying this. People realized there that Nixon was quite the "honest Abe" he claimed to be.

agent orange Agent Orange is a toxic chemical that kills leaves in the Vietnamese jungles.
The US did this because in Vietnam it was a lot like Japan and there was a lot of jungle terrane so after the US was frustrated enough they sprayed the forests with Agent Orange to kill the leaves and make it easier to see.
Below is a picture of Vietnam where Agent Orange was sprayed. This chemical brutally killed the plantation and many people who came in contact with it were severely affected by it including US troops.

napalm Napalm is a mixture of a thickening/gelling agent and petroleum or similar fuel. Napalm was initially used against buildings and later it was primarily used as an anti-personnel weapon that sticks to the skin and causes severe burns when on fire.
Because many people didn't want the US in the Vietnam War many of the civilians were very rude and disrespectful to the veterans when they got home. Out of all the wars the US had ever fought this war was hated the most and the vets were treated no better.

core american valuesNationalism is shown because when the North Vietnamese attacked the USS Maddox the country was happy to join the war because they thought that they were getting revenge and standing up for their country.
Progress is shown by the US was able to stop some of the spread of communism in Vietnam by not letting it spread any further. Through protests the people, which were mainly college students wanted and equal say in the government because the two did not agree. |
changes from previous era Th change from the previous era would be that in this war we used atomic weapons more such as Napalm and Agent Orange because the US got very frustrated with the terrine in Vietnam and they were beating us. Another change is that in this war we had a lot of protesters and many of them being college students.
