Gilded age
SEGREGATION
The separation of people on the basis of their skin color.
One of the main laws was that separate public accommodations were legal as long as they were equal. This shows that there was a separate waiting room for colored. The "separate but legal" doctrine was law but was never put into effect. As you can see colored would get what whites would but never to the samer scale.
J.D. RockefellerRockefeller made is fortune through controlling oil, he believed in horizontal integration which was shown through the control of 95% of the oil refineries of the nation.
This picture shows Horizontal Integratoin which is when you own every company that produces that one product, it is now illegal but was also called a monopoly because there is no competition between companies and one person can regulate the prices. Rockefeller is shown here using political graft to gain wealth for himself. Sitting on top of the "Oil" barrel suggests that he owns it all like horizontal integration.
The Knights of Labor was the first union to be open to all of the people, including men, women, immigrants and children. The union did fail and left all of these unskilled workers with out a union.

American Federation of Labor (AFL)
AFL was a union who only allowed skilled workers to join. They are the best known Union because they lasted so long.
With the AFL companies were not allowed to do this to their workers, they also didn't want skilled workers due to the fact that they would have to pay them more.
Below you see workers kneeling before the feet of the wealthy men and giving them what looks to be bags of money.
collective BARGAININGCollective Bargaining is the negotiation between representatives of labor unions and management to reach written agreements.
This was beneficial for both the workers and management, with an agreement workers didn't always have to strike which would mean they would lose their pay for that time and management wouldn't get their products made. With a negotiation the workers would get what they want without having to strike and the company wouldn't lose as much money.
